En el planeta distante Mobius, el Dr. Eggman ha conseguido las 7 Chaos Emeralds, joyas con un gran poder que son capaces de destruir el mundo, antes de utilizarlas, Sonic interfiere con sus planes, causando que él, sus amigos y Eggman sean teletransportados a la Tierra. Sonic se hace amigo de un chico de 12 años llamado Chris Thorndyke, y juntos deciden ir a recuperar las Chaos Emeralds antes que Eggman lo haga. Basada en la popular serie de videojuegos creada por SEGA.
